About this study

The purpose of this study is to work together on Wikitree to break brick walls and gather useful information on the McGeever surname. We'll do that by collecting sourced information and resources pertaining to the McGeever surname throughout the world and sharing it here in one place (on Wikitree).

Goals

The main goal is to add as many sourced McGeever profiles to Wikitree as we can find, and then, hopefully, connect them all eventually (based on sourced info).

You can contribute by doing any of the following:

1. Take a DNA test and add the results to your profile. Your results will also appear on McGeever DNA Connections.
2. Profile Improvement
   1. Ensure each profile is Genealogically Defined.
   2. Add sources!
      • Add in-line sources for each fact, avoiding references to unsourced online trees.
      • Add new information with in-line sources; review vital information in profiles and substantiate same; and review and confirm existing source citations.
   3. Connect any unconnected family member (i.e. ones with unknown parents) to one of the older McGeever lineages.
   4. Add Categories where appropriate.
3. Write or expand biographies, using in-line sources and adding explanatory remarks, if needed (i.e. Research Notes, disputed persons sections).
4. Discover the relationship between the oldest McGeever individuals within the United States and any immigration to the United States.
5. Help add to a list of useful sources
6. Add to the list of McGeever notables

Adding a Profile to this Study

Please avoid adding every McGeever / McGeaver profile to this Study. See List of McGeever Profiles below to get a sorted list of every McGeever profile on WikiTree.

The criteria for adding a McGeever profile to the study are:

1. Add a McGeever profile to this study if their McGeever ancestor is currently unknown (or uncertain).
2. Add a McGeever profile to this study if they are adopted.

To add your ancestor to this study, simply copy the following template to the Biography section of his or her profile:

Once the profile is connected to the main McGeever family line, then remove the template from the profile. Keep the template if the McGeever parentage is marked as uncertain.

Process

1. Take existing McGeever profiles on WikiTree and use records found on FamilySearch.org and elsewhere to reconstruct the pedigree as much as possible.
2. Find other McGeevers on FamilySearch.org etc, add them to WikiTree, reconstruct pedigree or find where they fit in existing families
3. Find any historical newspaper references to any McGeevers
4. Find any histories of the McGeever family, whether books, previous personal research, or other written materials. Use these to compare against primary records.

• Note: Please make sure to provide sources for all information. Please do not base profiles entirely on derivative sources, such as online family trees that aren't sourced. If the tree you are referencing is sourced, please provide those sources on the profile. Otherwise, please do not simply copy over information from online trees and risk repeating their mistakes. As Wikitree says, "The buck stops here."
